58th Avenue Book Group: The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton

10:15 AM - 11:30 AM
Velma Teague Branch Library
VTL Meeting Room

The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton is an incredibly well-researched historical novel that reveals secret after secret. It is an excellent first novel. Eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman arrives in Amsterdam in October of 1686 to begin a new life as the wife of merchant Johannes Brandt. Johannes is kind but distant and often spends more time at work or locked in his study, leaving her to face his cold sister, Marin. When Johannes presents Nella with a cabinet-sized replica of their home as a wedding gift, she engages a miniaturist to furnish the little house. As the packages arrive, they seem to mirror a little too closely what is happening in the home. Nella is determined to unravel the mystery of the miniaturist, though doing so may well reveal more than just the hidden depths of her new household.

Arts and Crafts Corner: Adult Coloring Club

6:00 PM - 7:45 PM
Velma Teague Branch Library
VTL Meeting Room

The Coloring Club is a relaxing way to enjoy yourself with others at the Velma Teague Branch Library. We have hundreds of coloring pages available for you to color. Some of the more popular pages are florals, interior designs, nature, animals, eastern-inspired fabric designs, the great outdoors, botanicals, stained glass, mandalas, cityscapes, and geometricals. We also have hundreds of high-quality colored pencils for you to use as well as a nice selection of magic markers, specialty colored pens, pastels and crayons.

The club meets on the fourth Monday of every month at 6:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room at the Velma Teague Branch Library. For those who are more adventurous, the librarians can also show you four different coloring apps for i-pads and tablets that you might want to try.

Of course you can always bring your own projects and just enjoy our relaxing atmosphere. To aid in creating the atmosphere we play quiet instrumental music recordings during the evening.
